Technology has, undoubtedly, made our lives easier in many ways. Unfortunately, it has also opened up a scary new world for scammers, crooks, and thieves. The latest warning was delivered to us by our company, Slifer Smith & Frampton, and it’s the scariest one yet. It involves the two parties in a transaction that most of our buyers and sellers trust the most: agents and title companies. Basically, a crook will “ghost” an agent’s email, and provide wiring instructions for earnest money, or closing funds. The email will look like it comes from either your broker or your title company. Needless to say, it doesn’t, and the wiring instructions will send your money to someone else, and it will be gone without a trace.
Protecting our customers is our primary goal- at Slifer Smith & Frampton, we will NEVER email wiring instructions to you. Your instructions will come from the title company, and will come in an encrypted email. We encourage you to double check that the instructions are valid by picking up the phone and calling the closer with whom you are working. We want to keep your hard earned money where it is supposed to be- with YOU. So does the title company, so they’ll not only be happy to take your call, they’ll appreciate it.
