I’m not qualified to discuss the many ways to keep yourself personally safe. I can, however, discuss one important thing that you can do in order to make sure that all of your personal possessions stay safe.
Sometimes when I am looking at Facebook, I see people posting about an upcoming trip. Even worse, they’ll post about how they need a dog sitter for their furry friend, and they’ll give specific dates when this service is desired. Sure, you’re excited and want to make sure that your precious pet is taken care of. But you’ve also just told anyone who can see your posts exactly when you’re going to be gone. You’ve told them that your house will be empty. And you’ve told them that your dog is no longer going to be protecting your assets. You might as well post a personal invitation for nefarious individuals to enter your house, and to take their time.
The same goes for those wonderful vacation photos that you post, with a caption along the lines of, “Just arrived at Hacienda Relaxo. I can’t believe that we get to stay here a whole week!” Another engraved invitation made out specifically to thieves, inviting them into your home, and letting them know exactly how long they have to sort through your stuff.
Just my two cents, though if I’m ever out of town, you’ll never know it. Our children know that they can post as many vacation photos as they want- as long as they do it when we get home.
